Trashing bacon?!

So... my hopes of starting that new exercise regimen were not fully realized today. Apparently I was tired... the alarm went off, and... then it was approximately thirty minutes later... awesome. Then, I got off early today, there was a repair man coming for the television, and I planned to try it during the time I had off, so of course, it rained off and on for most of the afternoon. I also forgot my pedometer again today, that's becoming a bad habit I need to break myself of.

"But Zeb, what the heck does that title have to do with anything?"You ask? This evening, I went to throw something away, and what was in the garbage can? But two pieces of bacon, and not just any bacon, bacon from pastured pigs, free of all nitrites, nitrates, and all unnatural things, all they were was salt, and pork belly... they are wonderful... and they were cruelly, nay, heartlessly thrown away! Far short of their prime! So... I've officially eaten something out of the garbage... but seriously... they were laying on top of a zip loc bag that held nothing but clean freshly picked lettuce, and I'll be d*mned if I'm going to miss out on good bacon. I don't know when I'll get it again!

Breakfast - smoothie
Lunch - blue corn chips and homemade salsa with a glass of milk
Snack - a slice of bacon
Dinner - vegetable soup with beef and barley, fresh made bread, a glass of milk, a spoon of nutella and jello with fruit
Snack - two slices of bacon

I don't regret what I did, and I certainly won't apologize for it (I'm talking about the bacon again in case anyone wasn't sure).

Well, I hope to start wearing my pedometer again tomorrow. I'm putting it next to my glasses, so hopefully I'll remember... otherwise, yikes.

Also, I've been in a bit of contact with a farm where I'm going to get a cow share, which pleases me very much. I hope to make contact with the farm tomorrow to discuss the paperwork... milk, yum!

So... has anyone seen the trailer/preview for "Food, INC" yet? I wouldn't mind some comments regarding your thoughts on that one. I'm definitely going to be there either 06/12/2009 or 06/13/2009. Most definitely.

Two posts in one day?! I'm shocked!

The actual website for my blog is: http://lgndietlog.blogspot.com/

I'd like to give credit where credit is due, the actual name I got from my cousin. What it means. I probably shouldn't have gotten from a cousin. Alas, here we are.

breakfast - smoothie
snack - carrots, celery, almonds
lunch - ham and Swiss sandwich, v-8, one small apple, chocolate square, prune, jello w/fruit, cottage cheese
snack - one slice of bacon, 1 beer
dinner - BBQ chicken breast, mashed potatoes, fried okra, salad with Italian dressing, milk

Tab and I also went on a thirty minute walk, as is becoming custom. Tomorrow morning we're starting some more exercise that I thought of last night when I couldn't sleep (always a great way to get inspiration, right?). We're going to wake up at 6:00am (as per usual) and we're going to go outside and walk down our driveway, do 5 sit ups, then run up our driveway, and do 5 push ups, and we're going to repeat for 10 minutes. Now, I know that doesn't sound like much, but it is something new... also, if you've experienced our drive way... then you'll know that is something more. It is quite long, and quite steep. I'm hoping to make this a daily thing for my mornings, it won't take too long, and it will work quite a bit of the body.

I'll let you know tomorrow if I make it. Otherwise, Tab'll be responsible for letting you know if I didn't!

Memorial Day Entry - Question!

05/25/2009
breakfast - honey nut cheerios with milk
snack - medium popcorn, large root beer (watched Star Trek, I refuse to not get popcorn and a drink!)
dinner - Yang Kee Noodle leftovers, 1/2 firecracker chicken, 1/4 some kind of chicken thing Tab got, 2 1/2 pot stickers, 1 crab rangoon, milk, piece of strawberry shortcake w/o cream

Question of the day:

Here's a chance for anyone to (possibly) take the lead, today's question(s) are worth a total of 10 points:

In the trailer for "Food, INC." There are two authors shown, give me their names (2 pts) and their books (2 pts). This part is much harder, as such, it is worth 6 points. There is a quote in the trailer, "Everything we've done in modern agriculture is to grow it faster, fatter, bigger, cheaper." Who said this (I'll provide a clue, he is shown later in the trailer).

Three more days...

So, another three days in a row... plus, I'll be entering my dinner before I've eaten it, but... I'm aware of what it is going to be anyway... so I'll survive.

lunch - none
snack - New Holland "The Poet" Oatmeal Stout

I've not had dinner yet today, but it will be soon, and it will be that. The omelet I had was fantastic... and I've forgotten what good local berries were like... mmm... I'm hoping the pork chop will be good... I hope to not overcook it. (crosses fingers) Also, everyone in Kentucky should totally be eating Kenny's Cheese (if they like cheese) the options there are wonderful.

Alright, everyone have a good holiday weekend, and I will put up the next question with my next entry!

I've also been rather dilligent in getting at least three miles of walking in per day, which is a good start. I jog some here and there, but that's not entirely consistent yet. Tomorrow, I get to go to the Owen County Farmer's Market, which makes me happy, I'll get fresh baked goods and fresh salad, yay! Then, Saturday morning, Tab and I are going to the Bardstown Road Farmer's Market (double yay!) which means even more fresh fruits, veggies and meats! I also may get to go to Georgetown for sushi, which should be awesome! (What can I say? I likes me some raw fish!)

Alrighty, and the answer to the question is... dentist. Weston A. Price was a dentist.

Jamie is still holding the lead with... 5.

Points Possible - 15

Today's Post - Part 1

I'm way behind now, so... I'm going to post the last three days now, and then later, I'm going to post today's (I hope). My weight on Monday morning was 321.7, still waaaay too high, but... lower than before, maybe there will be some good to come of this.

I'll enter today's log, later today. I've also started walking some more, which is good, and jogging a little bit, which I think is also good. I got my pedometer from that Virgin Healthmiles thing, so I've been using that to get the required 7000 steps/day. I forgot to use it today, alas. I'll get better at that, it has quite a few possible rewards for the diligent person.

I'll also post the answer to the last question when I post again later tonight. At least I've gotten one guess on there! Here's the question again: question #3 (3 points): Weston A. Price http://westonaprice.org/, a man who traveled the world studying different dietary habits, did what as a profession?

I'd like to point out that the lag time isn't totally my fault. I wanted to post Thursday night, Tab decided I should go to bed instead. I ended up surfing the internet for about 20 more minutes instead of doing either... but still.

Alright gentle readers, here's question #3 (3 points): Weston A. Price http://westonaprice.org/, a man who traveled the world studying different dietary habits, did what as a profession?

Days 10 and 11

Okay, another two days at one time... to be fair. Yesterday blew amazing amounts of a*s (I'll censor myself, why not?). Prior to lunch, the day was so bad, I broke down and ate McDonald's (a perfect example of irony, emotional eating, and self-flagellation if there ever was one). Then, the day just got worse, and I gotta tell you, it has to be a pretty bad day for me to get McDonald's in general.

So, here goes:

05/12/2009:

breakfast - smoothie (okay, good so far...)

lunch - McDonald's - two cheeseburgers, 6 piece nuggets, large fries, large coke, 2 apple pies (I seriously don't wonder why I'm fat)

dinner - almonds, 1 small apple, grapes, and a chocolate square

I've known for a while, but thought about it some more yesterday, I'm an emotional eater, I will sometimes eat things I know are not good, just because they make me feel better, at least for a little while. It is seriously like a drug, like I've taken a hit of something, and I feel better for a bit, but then I just feel totally sh*tty pretty soon after. What's even better. I know that I'm going to feel bad the whole time I'm eating, and, I even start becoming guilty while I'm eating the nastiness. So... once said food is in my system, the fun begins in that, I don't eat enough fast food for my body to handle that, it's almost like not drinking but once a month or so, and then binge drinking (same general results as well, except I'm not ending up in the hospital). So, I'm sacrificing later, for that short bit of comfort. The irony comes in because I was eating McDonald's, while reading the book "Fast Food Nation" which describes why McDonald's / Fast Food is basically cause for quite a bit of the evil in the world... and I didn't even laugh about it... I may have even eaten some more for dinner, but I doubt it.

05/13/2009

breakfast - 2 doughnuts, 1 pint of milk (I know, what's the point at the food diary if all I do is get worse and worse, right?)

lunch - Subway: their new lowfat sub, Tuscan Chicken, provalone, black olives, banana peppers, green peppers, spinach, onions, one strip of the sauce that comes with it, 21oz of the 5 calorie lemonade and a bag of sun chips

dinner: chicken tortellini alfredo with onions, spinach, mushrooms and black olives, a glass milk, a bowl of raisin bran, dried cherries, dried cranberries, and some jello with fruit - at least none of the servings were overly large.

So... we'll see what happens. Well, no question yet, but soon, I hope.

Days 8 and 9

I'm starting to lose it already on the daily updates. I'll try and keep up a little better. We'll see how it goes though.

Okay,

05/10/2009

breakfast - nothing (didn't really have enough time before lunch)

lunch - fried chicken drumstick, part of a bbq chicken breast, one slice of pork loin with horseradish sauce, 2 rolls, and then a sampling of: corn pudding, mac/cheese, beets, green beans, cooked apples, mashed potatoes with milk gravy, some Cesar salad, macaroni salad, 1/2 a small piece of apple pie - in the end, the Mother's Day buffet at Claudia Sanders was not as impressive as I had hoped (and was not worth the price) but... I didn't pay, and I had an awesome time with the family. I had very small portions of each of the things, just so that I could try everything, I did have a LOT of sweet tea though... (they did a good job with that, not too sweet, just sweet enough).

dinner - or should I say... brinner! woo! (If you don't get the reference, then you're no friend of mine, or you've been stationed out of the country and aren't up on the references) a piece of cold pizza, some cheez-its, bacon (undetermined number, possibly 5-6 slices, thick cut, maple cured - nature's candy indeed), toast with garlic butter and two eggs overhard.

05/11/2009

Weighed myself again, started this exercise at 325.8, last week, I was 322.6, this week, I was 325.6. That sucks... time to "evolve" some more habits, I'll never see my 1911 Operator otherwise.

breakfast - smoothie (new ingredient, apple cider vinegar) also, I dropped the toast, it was a little too much. Plus, I get a good amount of fiber and such from the hemp seed powder in the smoothie.

lunch - ham and Swiss on wheat, almonds, chocolate square 77% (yum!), celery, pineapple chunks, and black grapes

afternoon snack - 2 tbsp whipped cream

dinner - fish, baked french fries, spinach, a carrot, two pieces of sourdough with garlic/butter, dried cherries/cranberries, jello with fruit, and a glass of milk.

Also, Tab and I took a 30 minute walk, and took part in a strenuous activity, which should be good.

Alright, I do believe that I'm off to bed. I'm reading about food borne illnesses in fast food, so I'm going to wait a little while before having another question.

Thanks to all who are keeping up with my blog. Hope it isn't too boring. Tomorrow I'm going to share some about "Virgin Health Miles" through work, which is going to add some more motivation to get into shape. Also, apparently there's a good chance I have stage 1 hypertension... awesome. I've been on the cusp of high blood pressure for pretty much as long as I can remember, but on Sunday, I tested my bp using some gauge my grandmother bought that my dad has to use, and my systolic was over now... suck... so... that's some MORE motivation even... gotta get that down. I refuse medication.

Day 6 AND 7 - Answer to Question 2

05/08/2009

breakfast - none (bad, I know, we were a little late getting up)

lunch - two hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans (it was for a good cause though, Relay for Life)

dinner - home made pizza: pepperoni, mushroom, black olive, jalapeno, onion, and (of course) cheese - it was really good too.

snack - a piece of the Reese's thing, 1 beer (New Holland Brewing Company's http://newhollandbrew.com/ The Poet Oatmeal Stout - mmm... good)

Also, some other times this week I did some walking, about 25 minutes worth, forgot to mark it, my bad. I also forgot to post this last night, I was apparently tired or something, I also got pretty hooked on "Veronica Mars" we'll see how that goes...

Answer to Question 2: The meatpacking industry, and the job is sanitation.

Jamie - 5 Points (still in the lead - I'll be kind of sad if he wins with so few points due to lack of participation... oh well, can't complain to hang out with my best friend either)

05/09/2009

breakfast - two pieces of toast (homemade sourdough mmm!) with roasted garlic raw milk butter (MMM!) and a glass of milk

lunch - hot tea, Kung Po Chicken with fried rice, egg drop soup, a pork egg roll, and Tab's left over Szechuan (spelling?) chicken - it was tasty

snack - New Holland Brewing Company Full Circle - it washed down all the back spray of insect killer I'd most likely consumed oh so well.

I've also had a cup of kool-aid and I'll most likely eat at least something later, just haven't decided on it yet, and most likely won't put much effort into it.

Also, I think I've "settled" on the Springfield Armory 1911 Operator:

Yep, it's because of the rail (might just invest in something by surefire http://www.surefire.com/X400-LED-WeaponLight, and because of all the match grade components. Also, while I was looking at various incarnations of the 1911 last night, I found this http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=128500181#PIC which was totally awesome... I had my own John Woo inspired dreams last night of double fisting .45s... it was fun. Of course, I'd need another pistol... anyone want to help me with a collection of some kind? Or join in with donations if I lose enough weight? (I'm just kidding, I'll learn to save on my own).

Anyway, tomorrow is going to be rough, I get to go to Claudia Sanders http://www.claudiasanders.com/ for Mother's Day, and I'll most likely take full advantage of the situation. I'll let everyone know how it went.

Thanks for the audience particpation thus far!

I had some other stuff I wished to talk about, alas, I do not recall what I was thinking about... oh well.

Food Diary - Day 3

Breakfast - smoothie, two pieces of toast with olive oil/butter
Morning snack - 2 oz. almonds, 1 small apple
Lunch - ham and swiss on wheat with spicy mustard, mayo and sweet pickles, 1 small apple, apple sauce, jello with fruit, carrots
Afternoon snack - 2 tbsp redi-whip
Dinner - chicken "fried rice" (doctored Chicken Helper) with onions, peas, and corn, jello with fruit, glass of milk

Not a bad day, there isn't going to be much variation in breakfast and lunch I don't think. at least not during the week. Also, I think I'm going to use the weekends to go crazy... of course, not TOO crazy.

I also took a 25 minute walk today. I was looking at a short (9:32) video at http://www.esquire.com/the-side/video/dr-oz-workout-0509 that seems quite interesting and I may very well start doing that in the mornings... I can handle seven minutes of repetition during the day first thing in the morning. Plus, the incorporation of yoga is awesome too. There really aren't too many options for exciting classes for workouts here, but I can do a LOT of walking. On the weekend I hope to take part in some "active activities" I think it would be a lot of fun.

Alright, now, here's the contract that Tab and I agreed to. Some of the particulars are not completely worked out yet, but the basic ideas are there.

"For every 1 pound Zeb loses, Tab will pay him $10. For every 1 pound Zeb gains, he will pay back $10. When Zeb has lost 40 pounds, Tab will pay for one day at Open Range Sports http://www.openrangesports.com/. When Zeb reaches 250 pounds, Tab will give the additional money needed for Zeb to purchase the pistol of his choice."

We both signed this on 04/26/2009. I'm not sure what activities I'll take part in at Open Range yet, and I'm not exactly sure what pistol I would choose (I'm thinking this one http://www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/crimson_carry/Ultra_Crimson_Carry/ right now, but my ideas change daily, part of me still wants the Springfield Armory 1911 TRP or G.I. as well).

Well dear readers, that's all I have for today. I hope to have a question tomorrow. I'll see what I can do on that front.

Zeb

Food Diary #1

Breakfast - egg sandwich - 1 egg over hard, 2 pieces of wheat toast, mustard, glass of milk
Lunch - tiny turkey sandwiches - 4 Sister Shubert's rolls, leftover turkey breast, honey mustard
Afternoon - 20oz Gatorade
Dinner - (uh oh) - KFC Buffet - 2 drumsticks, 1 thigh, 2 wings, mashed potatoes w/gravy, cole slaw, corn, green beans, biscuit, Dr. Pepper (yeah... that's not a good one... it happens).
Evening - Simply apple juice

I've decided I'm not putting water on here, I don't care that much, I do a pretty good job with it anyway. Most mornings during the week I have a smoothie. I'll include the ingredients in that at least once... they vary slightly depending on what I've got around, but there's a basic theme.

Well, that's day one. Thanks for the comments I've gotten thus far. I really appreciate it already.

Zeb

I am fat.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Facebook:

As the title suggests, I am fat. It is a serious situation. I've been fat for 20 (give or take) years of my life (I'm 26). My parents have attempted various systems of rewards in an attempt to get me to lose weight, such as $500 if I lose a set amount of weight, or a new wardrobe of clothing if the amount of weight I lose requires it. If you've seen me recently, you'll know, none of these have worked. My fiance, Tabitha Ashley, may have come up with a reward that might actually get me motivated to do something about it (which I will describe in more detail later).

Another step I'd like to take is to get the word out to enough people to hopefully garner some online support in the matter. What I'm going to do is attempt to write an entry everyday and open myself to all sorts of online scrutiny. At first, it will just be a food diary, eventually evolving into a food/exercise diary. I'm hoping that you readers will help me out with words of encouragement, as well as questions/comments about my diet, exercising, what has worked for you, what hasn't, etc.

Now, to head off some comments, I'm not going vegetarian. 1. I like meat. 2. I like to have complete protein. 3. I've read too much that makes me uncomfortable with the idea. 4. I like meat. I respect people that do it, it just isn't for me. Also, I like to avoid processed foods. I'm a big proponent of the "slow food" movement. I'm an avid supporter of the ideas of Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food), Nina Planck (Real Food: What to Eat and Why), and Joel Salatin (Polyface Farms) along with things like www.eatwild.org and the Weston A. Price Foundation. I would absolutely adore discussions about those things.

There are times that I will make decisions about my diet/exercise that are not beneficial. I'm not going to worry (that much) about it. I'm imperfect, shit happens, that's how I got in my current condition. I'm going to attempt to make strides. Also, I'm still a fan of the occasional adult beverage.

So, along with daily food diaries, every Monday, I'm going to weigh myself first thing and I'll include that in my entry for the day. If/when I go to the doctor, I'll summarize that. You make think of this as too much information, I'm okay with that, I'm not forcing you to read. I'm just asking you, one friend to another, to be an active participant in my quest to become a healthier person.

I'll include more information about my reward system later on.

Thank you very much for your time,

Zeb

Question #1: (5 Points) This will be much harder for those that haven't seen me recently, and Tab, your guess won't count, but how much do you think I currently weight? (Closest guess gets the points, a tie and both will get the points, correct answer tomorrow evening at ~7:00pm)
